The complex ocean voyage
A Handymax vessel is chartered to transport 46,000 MT of corn from Montevideo, Uruguay, to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on a 22-day voyage in January.
This period sees challenging maritime weather conditions in the South Atlantic and powerful currents near the southern tip of Africa, such as the Agulhas Current, which can reduce vessel speed by up to 5 knots if there’s not proper route planning.
The route involves passing through a Special Area located around South Africa, where there are specific regulations around bilge water.
